school visits

Presentations can include any combination
of the following:
• A hands on look at different steps of
the publishing process: From manuscript acquisition, through editing, illustrating, printing, and publishing. I have worked
in children's book publishing for 25 years,
both in-house at many NYC publishers
and as a freelance art director, designer, illustrator for other publishers. I will share:
early manuscripts, editorial notes, sketches,
book dummies with notes, progressive
separated four-color printer proofs, press
sheets, and folded and gathered unbound
proofs—all which demonstrate the many steps
of making a book.
• A classroom art project related to a specific title.
• Artist/group illustration exercise where students create a character, setting, and plot.
• Powerpoint presentation about my working process, including research, writing and illustrating.
I examine the inspirations, struggles, and choices I make for different books. See my YouTube video interview about the creation of The East-West House: Noguchi's Childhood in Japan.
Programs are 45 minutes to one hour. Presentations are modified according to the age range and size of the group. I prefer groups of 50 or less for a personal hands-on experience with the many materials I bring.
