SCHOOL VISITS focus on how children’s picture books are created. ?Presentations can include any combination of the following:
- A hands on look at different steps of the publishing process: From manuscript acquisition, through editing, illustrating, printing, and publishing. I have worked in children’s book publishing since the mid-80’s, both in-house at many NYC publishers and as a freelance art director, designer and illustrator for other publishers. I have many materials to share: Early manuscripts, editorial notes, sketches and dummies with notes, “progs” or progressive proofs (four-color, separated proofs), “f and g’s” (folded and gathered proofs), and press sheets—all which demonstrate the many steps of making a book.
- A classroom art project related to a specific title.
- Artist/group illustration exercise which helps students understand the
process of creating a character and situation.
- Powerpoint presentation about my working process, including research, writing and illustrating. I examine the inspirations, struggles, and choices I make for different books. See my YouTube video interview about the creation of The East-West House: Noguchi's Childhood in Japan.
Programs are 45 minutes to one hour. Presentations are modified according to the
age range and size of the group. Since I bring a wealth of hands-on materials, I prefer groups of 50 or less.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT workshop themes:
- Visual Literacy and Multicultural Picture Books
- Collaborative Writing and Illustration Projects
