As art director/designer since the company’s inception, I’ve shaped the look of this award-winning multicultural children’s book publisher, guiding many first time picture book artists into successful careers.

Four Winds Press, New York, NY 2/91–10/94
I reviewed, selected, directed illustrators, mapmakers, and calligraphers; supervised assistants and freelancers; designed the complete list including picture books, chapter books, non-fiction photographic books and novels. I worked closely with editorial, marketing, and production. I supervised full color, halftone and duotone press runs.

I art directed and designed all type of children’s books, managed the design staff, freelancers, and illustrators, and worked closely with a large editorial staff for two imprints during company restructuring maintaining schedules and budgets while bringing in new talents.

As first staff designer for this fine art publisher, I designed award-winning books and issues of their quarterly magazine, brochures and promotional materials, as well as gallery exhibitions.

Assisting the art director I was introduced to all aspects of children’s book publishing. I prepared traditional mechanicals, worked with typesetters and compositors, checked blues and proofs, designed novels and picture books, reviewed portfolios, organized art files and handled all correspondence.
