Inspired by a visit to the Metropolitan
Museum of Art and viewing of Romare Bearden's "The Block," a six panel
18' x 4' collage tribute to Harlem,
I introduced this artist to my daughter's
first grade class. They were studying community. I lead the class in a
workshop, each child creating their
own collage building. When hinged
together the class had an instant neighborhood. This also began a long relationship with Scholastic's Instructor Magazine. I became a regular writer
for their Masterpiece of the Month
feature with pull out poster, and wrote
the accompanying artist workshops
as well. The Masterpiece poster/workshop series won a Neal Award for best
magazine department.
